Room 204, Sunday Afternoon

It was sad being stuck in sweaters and sweatshirts again--and right now Karla was wearing both because it was cold, dammit--but it wasn't like there was nothing to do in Fandom. Just because they were no longer in Hawaii didn't mean they couldn't keep themselves entertained.

...It just all had to be inside. And not on the beach. And probably wouldn't involve brightly colored drinks decorated with cute plastic animals and tiny umbrellas.

Instead, Karla had decided that the boyos were going to host another movie night. Rather than let Ender choose the film, she'd grabbed one about a snake and a magical cup or something. She hadn't really been paying attention. Actually, she was planning to use it for background noise while she and Ben bitched about Ender's tan and she laughed at Ben for getting his face stuck to the table that one time.

"Kiss kiss!" she called, poking her head through the door. "I'm bored, so guess what! We're hanging out today!"

Weren't they so lucky?

"Yes, we are; yes, we do, and I brought a movie instead," Karla said, holding it out so they could see the DVD. "So snacks are your responsibility."

Duh. That's clearly how things worked. Even when you didn't know about them in advance.

"Though I suppose we could put the movie on hold for awhile while I make cookies."

Ender pushed his laptop aside. "I'll go get snacks," he said, sanely, and got up off his bed, heading for the door.

Karla took that as an invitation to come in and bounded into the room. "Move," she said companionably to Ben and proceeded to take over half of his bed and a goodly number of his blankets as he grudgingly complied. "I hope he grabs warm snacks," she said. "I'm cold."

"I'm not sure how you could be," he replied, laughing. "You have half of my blankets."

"Hawaii spoiled me," Karla admitted, slowly drawing another one towards her. "I'm going to be absolutely miserable in Glacia, I swear."

"I didn't think it was possible to adapt to a new climate that quickly," Ender supplied, coming in with some bags of chips and popcorn, and at least one bag of jerky.

Nothing warm, guys. Sorry. "If you want more than this, we're ordering Chinese," he said, decisively, putting the food down on his dresser and tossing Ben a bag of chips.

Ben snagged it easily and popped it open. "I could eat Chinese," he said to the surprise of no one in the room. "What movie did you bring us?"

"I could, too," Karla said, adding to the general level of surprise in the room by negative amounts. "I'm hungry!"

And now she was going to let go of his blanket and attempt to steal some chips. Everything was better when she stole it from Ben.

"And I got us a movie about a snake. I thought it might be jungley and remind us of our trip. There's just a big cup on the front of the DVD, though," she said, handing the movie over.

Ender just sighed. But with Ben on movie-starting-duty, that left him on the food-ordering side of the equation, even if he wasn't that hungry.

... Yeah, withhold your shock there, too.

He reached over to snag his phone off the nightstand, punching in the number. "I'm pretty sure that isn't about an actual jungle," he said, absently.

"Is it about a pretend jungle?" Ben asked, clicking through the menus to get the film started.

"I'm pretty sure pythons are jungle creatures," Karla said seriously. "Unless it takes place in a zoo?"

"Pyth-- No, I think that's the comedy--"

Ender sighed, as someone picked up on the other side of the line. "Yes, hello, we'd like to order...?"

They'd have to figure it out themselves.

"It could be a last name," Ben offered, flopping back onto his bed and leaving room for Ender. "Monty sounds like it could be a first name. A kind of stupid first name, but still."

"I thought it was the snake's name," Karla said. "Like Kaelas and Ladvarian. I'm assuming it's a talking snake."

Because watching a movie about a silent snake would just be stupid, that's why.

"And order of friend dumplings, please!"

"...and dumplings," Ender finished, shooting them both a look. "Seriously, it isn't a person-- or a snake. It's--"

Sigh.

"Yes, at the school-- Yes, I'll come pick it up. Yes. Can I just take a moment to-- no, of course--"

"If he tells us it sings or dances or secretly loves its best friend, I'm going to laugh at you a lot for your taste in movies," Ben informed Karla.

"As long as it doesn't end with whippings and crucifixions, I'll be happy," Karla muttered. "And what's wrong with secretly loving your best friend?!"

...

"The love-story was the best part of the movie!"

Yeah, the only reason Karla wasn't getting glared at was that it would be far too obvious, thank you. Instead, Ender was going to place his order in complete calm, thank you.

He clicked off his phone. "Food's coming," he said, "And that isn't about snakes, but let's just watch the movie and you'll find out." He hadn't actually seen it himself, but he knew the troupe.

Ben leaned back against the wall and began watching. Halfway through the credits he offered, "This is kind of odd."

It had been a legitimate slip of the tongue! Which she'd covered up like a ninja.

"...Is this a movie about a moose, too?" Karla asked. "And why are there slashes through the o's?"

"It's a joke about the Swedish language," Ender said, getting up and moving over so he could sit down in that space Ben had so thoughtfully made for him. "They use a slightly different alphabet like that, but the joke is that it's still English."

Sigh, having to explain Earth humor.

"Besides, they've all been sacked," Ben replied with a little snicker.

"I'm still trying to figure out how you can carve initials into a moose with an interspace toothbrush," Karla said, before laughing at more of the credits. "Special moose effects? Moose choreography?"

"Why, don't you want to know who gave the large moose on the left hand side of the screen in the third scene from the end, a thorough grounding in Latin, French, and 'O' level geography?" Ender prompted.

But he managed to do so with a straight face.

Admire it.

Ben snorted and reached out to give him a playful shove. "A new career option just opened up for you," he teased.
