Karla stared at the Causeway. She needed to simply cross it and she’d be on the mainland. And there were plenty of people there who would enjoy taking advantage of a young girl, one who appeared lost and vulnerable. She would have no problem showing them the error of their ways, no problem with claiming the debt that their other victims couldn’t.

No problem with getting rid of whatever was left when she was done.

The Blood had no laws against murder, but even if they did, it wouldn’t matter. This wasn’t murder. It was justice.

She smiled and took the first step onto the Causeway.

She tilted her head, noting the sudden tension. "What? What's wrong?" Looking around, Aphrodite couldn't see anything. "Max?"

"Karla. And something's very, very wrong with her." Max grimaced and broke into a run.

Remembering things that Karla had shared with her, fear welled up in Aphrodite.

"Max, wait!" He didn't stop, and she followed as quickly as she could, using her powers to teleport to his side when he almost got out of sight.

She managed to gasp out a sentence as they ran. "Is she . . . hurt?"

"She's... something," Max said, he was running fast enough actually be breathing hard. "Rage. I almost don't recognize her."

Max was losing her again, but 'Dite gamely kept running. They'd been close to the causeway, having been on their way back from the mainland, and now their quarry was in view.

"What . . . in the world . . . would make her that --"

Aphrodite broke off, seeing Max approach the girl, then followed at a slower pace. She'd never been great with angry people anyway.

"I don't know. But I doubt it's good," Max slowed down as he got closer.
