He felt threatened enough by Raven now, especially after what had happened at the dance, that he wouldn't be caught dead without it.

Mine is vanished away, but I might call it in, just so that it's always accessible, regardless of what's going on with me.

She wasn't going to get into reasons she might not be able to get it herself. Jono was fully aware of the possibilities, after all.

Off-island?

There were reasons why a chat with Skywalker this week on the island was probably a terrible idea. Like how utterly and completely distracted they would be.

Karla didn't often, so she'd missed the other major factor in taking the talk off-island.

Mother Night, this whole things was an ugly tangle. She could only imagine how Jono was feeling right now. Jono had issues with his body already and to pair one of the sensations he actually liked with violating his mental shields...merciful Darkness, Karla wasn't sure he'd be able to enjoy the sensation of nails again for a very long time.

And Raven should know that. She was a bloody empath! She should have known the ugly memories that would come from breaking through Jono's shields! Hell's fire, even if he'd been hard and panting for her when she did that, it was the most effective way to destroy a mood Karla could think of!

I don't care if I have to come by and drop of Kayla just so you won't have to be alone tonight, Jono. I really don't want you to be. Is there someone you can visit that you'll feel safe? Hannibal?

And wasn't THAT bloody ironic? As well as being another giant Gordian knot that Karla didn't feel like cutting through just yet.

Still at the dance. It's winding down though. Probably going to Hannibal's with him tonight. We had plans, but...

He must have been shaken. He pretty much just admitted without saying as much that he and Hannibal had 'going home to get kinky tonight' plans.

I won't be alone. Do miss Kayla, though. I owe her a visit sometime. Promised her I wouldn't take off again and now look at me.

Because Karla was somehow ignorant of the kinds of things they got up to? Details, sure, but she had the general idea. She'd known you a very long time, Jono.

She loved your bouquet by the way. Immediately tried to put it all in her mouth. I could send you pictures, if you want. She's smiling now & it's the most precious thing in the world. Holding her head up all by herself (for a few seconds anyway) and she's even laughed a few times. She'll be 10 weeks tomorrow.

If it had been anyone else, Kayla probably would have forgotten him by now. But the Music had been the one to talk to her most when she was still in the warmdark.

Miss you. And I'll see about bringing Kayla to the island sometime. I understand if you want to avoid Glacia now more than ever.

Jono needed a minute before he could reply again, because he was feeling that pang of guilt and sadness. He loved Kayla so bloody much - she was family - and he was missing so much of her life already.

Thank you. I would love to see her again. I think... I might be. For a while. Until we know what to do. Or something. I don't want to seem like I'm running just when things stand to get more dangerous for you, though...

Except he didn't feel safe there, now. He had been merely uncomfortable before. But now...

Raven had made a crack at him for how often he was away, before she left. He wasn't going to be able to unhear that, now.

Other than the flowers, Raven hasn't done anything outwardly dangerous and hostile to me, Karla sent, sternly pressing the buttons as if that would help Jono feel how firm she was on this matter. Right now, YOU'RE the one who's been most affected by whatever's affecting her. Staying away means you're safer and maybe whatever's driving her will be more quiescent.

Karla scrubbed at her face, turning to bury it in Warren's wings for a moment. She needed the comfort that only inhaling the scent of cornchips could provide. She couldn't believe this was Raven that they were talking about. Except, as history could attest, it was very much believable.

Also, Warren will be accompanying me to the island Thursday. With Kayla. Can I convince you to babysit while we have brunch?

A brunch that would find itself very extended once they got to the island.

Jono... probably should warn Karla. But he still had no idea how long this pollen would last, and in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't at the top of his mind at he moment anyway.

I can babysit Kayla for as long as you need. As often as you need. Bring her by all the time. I... I'll probably be here. Not here-HERE, I don't live at Town Hall. Around. I'll be around. Around here.

Yeah, he needed to leave the dance soon and be not okay somewhere.

Yeah, Karla was getting that. She was nearly tempted to offer Kayla again, but if Hannibal had Jono covered, it was probably for the best that she not throw an infant into the mix.

I'm pretty sure that even if I can't find out on the island, Kayla can. Show up at the school after my class? We can hand her over then. I know she'll appreciate some Uncle Jono time.
