"One more time," Karla said, massaging her temples and counting backwards from ten. "The rule is...?"

Morton and Julian glared at one another before sullenly reciting, "We don't get to fight over the baby."

"Especially...?" Karla couldn't believe that she had to go over this with them. Again.

"When we're holding the baby."

"What happens when we do?"

"We lose baby-holding privileges for the rest of the day," they intoned. With another dirty look at Julian, Morton stepped forward and handed Kayla to her mother. "He started it," he muttered, loud enough to be overheard.

"Did not."

"Did too."

"Did not!"

"Did too!"

"Did n--"

"I swear by the Darkness, I will make it a whole week if the two of you don't stop bickering immediately!" Karla snapped, which caused Kayla to immediately begin fussing. Karla gave them both Look what you did! glares. "Shh, shh, shh, it's all right, baby girl," she soothed, jerking her chin towards the door so the idiot males she was stuck with knew to let themselves out. "Don't cry, little one, it's okay. Mommy's gotten rid of the morons." Karla sat on the rocking chair that Dinah had given them and gently rocked until Kayla settled down and fell back asleep. "Here's hoping the rest of your aunts and uncles know better," she said, since emails, texts, and other various kinds of notifications had gone out, apprising all and sundry that the estate was now open for visitors who wanted to meet Kayla. "Or that they all visit one at a time so no fights break out. Because this is apparently my life now. Refereeing squabbles over who gets to hold the baby." She pressed a kiss to Kayla's forehead. "Wanna see if Mommy and Daddy's high school friends are better at sharing than their Court?"

"Well look at you." Leda smiled at the infant. Her voice did not have the cutsey tone many people adopted when speaking to babies, but it was definitely softer and maybe just s touch higher. In Elvish she added; "I pray you use your power of cute only for good."

"Oh goodness no." Leda protested innocently. "I'm saving those for when she's a teenager."

Sila had been told many stories about Leda's adventures around that time.

"Oh Karla I'd hope that you knew me well enough to know that. For future reference though, would you consider exaggerated and heavily romanticized tales of your adventures in Faerie count as embarrassing stories? For a long lived species we Elves seem to create legends very quickly."

Seriously it had grown far beyond the song that had been written about the defeat of Corwyn.

Leda took the baby. "No grabbing my ear." she cautioned her. But let's face it if the kid did manage to get hold of Leda's ear, she wasn't gonna stop her.

"Well let's see...there's the story of how, to save your true love you single handedly destroyed Corwyn's castle with one spell. This is after Jimmy snuck in, past incredibly horrific traps and let you in. And Eli faced down his evil father in single combat, while Momoko defeated monster after monster sent after you all. And that's just the one that's relevant to what actually happened."

"You're still Karla, but only a very few people know you guys are Human. So you do get some Elven add ons as well. There's variations, but usually you're Karla Brynhildr."

Leda had also discovered that many popular folktales on Earth had equivalent versions in Faerie. And her friends had become entwined in those. Jimmy often took the place of Jack.

"Near as I know it means 'protector' but I don't think that's why they chose it. Brynhildr was the Queen of the Valkyries, a race of Fae that settled in Northern Europe on Earth. They were warriors and special favorites of the Gods.

"Possibly still are. See no one's seen or heard from them since Faerie and Earth became separate the first time, so they're all mysterious. Just like my three friends who helped defeat Corwyn."

"Oh when word gets out that you've got a kid too, that'll add a whole new chapter to your epic. I don't know how gossip works, but stuff gets out. Speaking of Dragons though, I recently found out that I have a cousin who's dad was a Dragon."

Elora's parents had been killed long ago during her cousin's own epic, and oft tragic adventures, but Leda had indeed felt new kinship with her BFF Ember.

"It was, as the story goes, the last close contact between Elves and Dragons. Well until I came along and was all like 'Hi let's be friends partly because it freaks everyone out.'"

Between giggles, Leda managed to answer. "You'd have to ask Ember about that. The only male Dragon I've spent much time with was Smoke, and he was always dressed in my presence. In human form anyway. Never actually checked him out down there when he was in full glory."

She also looked down at the kid. "Please don't remember this part of the conversation."

"Oh Gods, now I'm remembering trying to explain to Sila why she shouldn't bathe naked with Ron when he got too old."

Of course it turned out Ron would not have been any danger in that regard. His own parents had had to take him to task for sneaking his boyfriend into the palace.

Leda had not helped.
