glacial_queen: (The Hall/Keep)
After getting the news from Dinah yesterday, Karla was more determined than ever to head back home and see what she could dig up about the legend of Zuul. Only a legend, as far as she knew, passed down to young Queens as a warning, but there were too many pieces that fit together. The mass disappearances. The erasure of everything having to do with the vanished people. It would be stupid to just dismiss this all out of hand if there was even the slightest hope of finding something useful.

And Karla couldn't deny the rather morbid drive to discover just how much of Kaeleer had gone missing. It was hard to think of everything to ask after in a letter.

Fortunately, even with Portalocity as messed up as it was, Karla had a means of transport available. Raven had agreed to bring her here in exchange for Karla accompanying her to Jono's world. Of course, judging by the way Raven looked right now, maybe this trip wasn't the best idea ever, either.

"You okay?" Karla asked, ignoring the Keep for the moment--and the rising tide of nausea she'd had ever since they'd entered the Netherverse. "Being here bringing up bad memories, or--?"

Yeah. Karla remembered what had happened the last time bits of reality had gone missing.

The meeting took place after dark. For all that the Hall was filled with dark power that had seeped into its very stones, it was still easier for the demon-dead to arrive after the sun had set. Several bottles of yarbarah were already warming--this might be a war council, but Mrs. Beale would never allow Mephis, Prothvar, and Andulvar to go without refreshment.

All war councils need tea and cookies )

[Establishy, unless them that are there wish to talk to people! NFB.]

This wasn't a family meeting. It was a war council. Karla had never seen Saetan look quite so grave and even Lucivar had left behind a lot of his customary bluster. They were ensconced in the study, waiting for Morton to arrive. He was past due, though no one was mentioning that.

Though she could see they were all thinking it, especially when they looked at her. )

[For two, please! Up early for great SP justice. NFB for different world shenanigans.]

"Drink," Karla said, holding out the cup to Saetan, the wound on her wrist already Healing.

Saetan didn't even look up from his packing. Yes, he intended to vanish everything, but unlike certain blonde witches, he didn't see that as a reason to not bother packing everything away neatly. "Karla, we discussed this. I'm fine."

"You're going to be skipping your nap just so you can answer questions from some female who doesn't even believe in Craft and probably thinks you're crazy," Karla grumped. "A little bit of blood will make it so you don't spend the majority of the conversation in blinding agony. Stop being so cursed stubborn and just drink this. Or I'll kick you and tell Jaenelle why."

Why did everyone always feel the need to argue with their Healer. Was it because they thought she wouldn't throttle them? Because that was most certainly not true.

"Not just the young female," Saetan reminded her. "You said I'd be able to meet more of your friends if I didn't fuss this weekend. I didn't--I left all the fussing to you." He sighed. "I'll get no peace from you until I do?" Of course, the question if he'd get peace from her afterwards was also highly in doubt. So rather than argue more, he simply floated the cup over and drank. There were only a few swallows in the glass--enough for him to feel immediately better, but not enough to cause him to fuss at how much she'd given. "There, witchling. Satisfied?"

Karla peered at him, nodding as a bit more color suffused his complexion. "Yes." She gave him a hug and pressed a kiss to his cheek. "Thank you for taking care of yourself, Uncle Saetan. I'm very pleased with you. I can write Jaenelle again and tell you you probably aren't going through your second childhood again." She dodged his half-hearted swat and laughed. "I think that was the door," she said, skipping to answer the knock.

[Open for anyone who might have handwavily been invited, by either Karla or Saetan.]

Karla was pacing. She was trying to reconcile Raven's accusation--an accusation Karla believed--with what she knew of Professor Max. She even have an easier time believing that he had attacked Raven physically or emotionally than believing that he was a sarden vampire.

Her talk with Jack had been illuminating, but still didn't really give her the answers she was looking for. How could she have been so wrong about Max? How could she have missed that in his psychic scent? How the Hell was 'Dite going to take the news when she found out?

And, as much as she didn't want to think of it, what was going to happen to Max? It didn't matter that this had to be a one time thing, perhaps brought on by a lack of feeding and a sudden frenzy; there was no way the school would keep Max on as a teacher after this. And Karla felt bad for him; yes, he hurt Raven, but she couldn't forget how he helped her learn to use the sword, how he braved the tormented mental landscape of her thoughts, and how he'd forgiven her when she confessed to the love potion.

In all, it made for one very pensive, very unhappy witch.

[Open! With bouts of SP warnings as tonight I run my Scion game. May become a linkdrop later.]

Karla followed Draca down the halls of the Keep towards the library; Draca had assured Karla that Jaenelle had been ensconced in the library since she'd arrived, waiting for word of the Council's decision. Karla's reaction to Draca was just another sign of how much she'd changed since becoming friends with Jaenelle. She still remembered her only trip to the Keep before this one, back when she was a little girl of only four or five. She'd seen Draca--a human figure with unmistakable reptilian ancestry--and screamed. She'd had nightmares for a week after that trip. Now, however, she'd had so much time conversing with people who were either non-human or not fully-human, Draca's alien features hardly merited a second glance.

From the amused smiled Draca occasionally slanted her way when she thought Karla wasn't looking, it was likely she was also thinking of Karla's last visit. )

[And it's done! Like I'd really let Karla stay in Kaeleer. Second (or like sixth, really) verse same as the first. NFI, NFB, OOC is great. Some text and dialogue taken from Chapter Eight of Anne Bishop's Heir to the Shadows. I'll still be spamming your f-list today, but it'll all be for Fandom stuff.]
