Karla wasn't sure why she'd been surprised to discover that, in addition to renting the wonderful Captain Chiba and his yacht, Serenity, Warren had also rented them an island. Okay, so, he hadn't exactly rented the island, he'd rented the villa they were staying in which just happened to be situated on an island, and their exclusive use thereof had been included in the rent.

She had tried to laughingly explain to him that normal people didn't do that, that she was a Queen and daughter of a Queen and even she thought renting an island was extravagant, which was when he pointed out that a) they weren't normal by any means, b) this was their last vacation together for awhile, which meant he had every right to be as extravagant as he'd like, c) that neither of them would be comfortable staying at a resort where they'd have to hide who and what they were, and, d) the nonsense about renting the villa, which came with the island, as opposed to deliberately just renting an island which would be ridiculous.

Karla splashed him for the pure, patent nonsense which was the last argument, though she was willing to go along with him with the other three.

That, and, well, who would be that much of an idiot to turn this place down?
Not Karla, that was for damn sure )

"See?" Karla teased, resting her head on Warren's shoulder. "I told you it wouldn't be so bad. It's barely even cold out."

Okay, that was something of an exaggeration. It was November, even if Fandom's climate was warmer than Glacia's at the similar point in the year, and chilly enough. It was also far colder than Sunnydale had been up to this point, which meant that Warren was likely feeling it, even if Karla wasn't. Still, he did come with two big downy wings and Karla was providing heating spells, mulled cider, and hot coffee for the both of them, so she didn't think he could complain all that much. Besides, that just gave them an extra opportunity to snuggle, didn't it?

"You agreed to indulge me in a moonlit picnic," she added, laughing. "It's not my fault we're having it here instead of at your campus. I suggested we go to Hawaii for the weekend, but nooooooo. So now you get to deal with winter. Consider it preparation for Glacia."

[For he who has been lovingly modded, but also open for phone calls and folks who like moonlit picnics in the cold!]

Karla was pretty sure that the real reason Warren had scheduled their trip to Hawaii for a week after their birthday was because he knew how much she'd need to get away from the island right about now. Graduation was bad enough on its own, but added to that was the bad news about Triela, Tara's mom, and Katniss, and Karla was about ready to scream.

Hello Hawaii. Can I come over? )

So, back on the Causeway, Warren had mentioned a few things: crepes, boat rides, sunset, and sweeping Karla away unexpectedly. Warren being Warren, he'd managed to combine all of those things at once.

Responding to a message telling her to meet him at the hotel's dock, Karla was greeted by a male introducing himself as Captain Chiba, who escorted her onto the deck of his yacht Serenity. On the far side, hidden by the cabin, was a table set for two, with Warren already waiting. Soft music played, and there was a platter of crepes on the table between their place settings.

"We should be on the open ocean in plenty of time for sunset proper, young sir," Captain Chiba reported. "And at Lanai soon after. Until then, the deck is yours."

Most people would argue that the beginning of December was a stupid time for a picnic. Of course, most people hadn’t grown up in Glacia. So when Warren had shown up at her dorm room, picnic basket in hand and crooked grin on his face to invite her out, Karla hadn’t given thought to the calendar before she’d agreed. A bit of bundling, a few warming spells and they were off on an adventure!

Pity they were going to get more of an adventure than they were hoping for. )

Summer vacation had ended and school had begun, which meant that people needed to spend as much time at the beach as possible before winter set in and the beach got too chilly. Which was why Karla had decided on the beach as soon as Warren had suggested a picnic.

The fact that she'd get to wear her bathing suit in front of him? Never even crossed her mind, perish the thought.

"Here's a good spot," Karla said, calling in a blanket to lay down over the sand. "It's above the tideline, so we won't have to worry about getting suddenly swamped or something during our meal." Because they weren't smack in the middle of low tide right then anyway.

"I'm eager to see what you brought," she added, casting greedy eyes at the giant picnic basket in his hands. "If you'd given me more advanced notice, I would have baked cookies or something for us."

[For the other person on the daaaaaaaaaaaaate, please]

When Warren had suggested a picnic in the park (far from any flamingos) for their lunch, Karla had assumed he meant an actual picnic. A basket, a blanket, some sandwiches, a few sodas, and maybe some fruit for dessert. When they finally arrived at the corner of the park where Warren had set up, Karla realized that they were operating under two very different ideas of what a picnic was.

Snowy white linens covered the ground for several yards in every direction. In the center was--quite literally--a feast: two carafes of what smelled like coffee, a plate of various kinds of sandwiches with the crusts removed, at least three different kinds of salad, Quiche Lorraine, and what Karla was willing to bet was a whole roast chicken. And that was what she'd noticed first; there were numerous other handwavy plates and bowls filled with food, all of which smelled heavenly.

"Should I go change?" Karla asked, looking at the spread before them. "I feel like I should be dressed in something much nicer than this." She was only half-joking, really. "Mother Night, Warren, this looks amazing. All this for just some wing-scritches?"

[For the one mentioned! Warren and the picnic modded with permission.]
