Dearest Karla,
I'm so sorry to have to do this via letter, but Morton said that it was only fair that I tell you and I can't help but think he's right--a rare occurance, I know. But it wouldn't be fair to let your hopes be dashed when they show up, and and even less fair to make them be the ones to tell you.
I used 'they' quite deliberately. I will not be coming to your school this weekend. Oh, Karla, I'm so sorry to be missing it! We would have had great fun together and I am very much looking forward to meeting all your friends. But I am stuck making a visit to Little Terrielle instead, to spend my time associated with some 'proper Blood aristos.' That was part of the deal Papa struck with the Dark Council to get them to reconsider their decision. I have to spend two weeks a season in Little Terreille. I'm sure it won't be so bad--a bit like being in Chaillot again--except that my first trip starts the same day Papa and Morton will be leaving for Fandom. The Dark Council emissary will arrive the evening before to escort me there.
I am so sorry. We had known thia was coming, but we hadn't realized that the trip would correspond to your event until today, when we got the specifics.
