Bandwagon Ho!
Aug. 27th, 2009 01:13 pmThe ho is not me. I will leave it to the comments to decide who it ultimately is.
I have no new kids (let's see how long I can keep this promise, eh?), but figured it would probably be a good idea to do a repost anyway. Karla is kinda special. Special in both that Mary Sue-ish kind of way and also the same way her canon is special.Magical Cockrings! I wouldn't make that up!
Sorry Tracy!
Karla is a secondary character (*sniffles*) from Anne Bishop's The Black Jewels series. It is filled with magic and sexand the word 'cock' and darkness and A WHOLE LOT OF CRACK. I highly suggest reading it, though be prepared to find that Karla doesn't actually rate much in the way of pages devoted to her awesome. I know, it hurts me, too. But I want to make this clear now, since some people were sad to discover this the hard way.
A Few Notes
*Her current ability list
* When it comes to Craft, how if works, and what she can do, I'm making a lot of things up. Basic Craft are all taken from canon, but the how's and wherefore's are sketchy at best. It's even worse for specific caste abilities, as we get vague descriptions as "sing the Healing web" and "no Queens left to heal the land." So, I'm kinda making things up as I go along, trying for explanations that fit thematically, and hoping not to get jossed. If you have read the books and have comments or suggestions, feel free to let me know.
*Since Karla is pretty much a blank slate until she's fifteen, I'm making up her background wholecloth. Canon facts are included (parents killed at nine, mother the Territory Queen, etc), but everything else is all me. Again, I'm trying to stay close to the books in feel and theme.
*The world of the Black Jewels is dark and I'm not just talking about Jewel ranks. Sexual assault, rape, brutality, slavery, abuse of various types, dead children, ultraviolence, castration...I mentioned both crack and dark, yes? Most of this stuff won't come up in everydy conversation, but if your character ends up developing a close relationship with Karla, it's possible these themes will be mentioned. I will try to put any posts that deal with these things behind warning and cut tags, but I do want to put out a warning anyway.
Karla: The Good Parts Version
*Is 15, but only a freshman. Kaeleer doesn't have a school system quite like this current one.
*Is from the Territory of Glacia, in the Realm of Kaeleer. This gives her a unique views on a lot of things, since this world is completely and utterly foreign to her. She comes from a world of unicorns, dragons, demon-dead, and the entire society is a matriarchy. Females rule; males serve and protect. But 'to serve' is different than 'servitude,' so no worrying she'll try to order your boy around or anything.
*Is a mostly-trained Healer (heals the body), mostly-trained Black Widow (heals the mind), and a Queen (heals the heart). Healers are pretty self-explanatory, Black Widows weave tangled webs of dreams and visions, and are skilled in prophecy, illusion, and poisons, and Queens are the rulers of the Blood and the focus of their society. Being a Queen is a caste, not a title (a Queen is a Queen from the moment she's born, even if she never rules anything), and Karla's a little tetchy about the differences between this world's Queens and her own (thanks Arthur!). But she'll try to explain things as best she can.
*She's snarky, prickly, stubborn, tempermental, and a little spoiled. She's also sympathetic, understanding, loyal, friendly, trustworthy, and intelligent. She can be bitingly honest and very pragmatic. Her ethics are not your ethics and shesometimes often has some problems accepting that Kaeleer's ways aren't always the best ways. She's also a bit of a brat. As always, her jerkiness is not my jerkiness.
*Jerkiness is too a word. Shut up.
*When she's not consciously being a Black Widow, she can really fail at reading and understanding people.
*She uses Craft all the time. She's not showing off --exactly--but using magic is like a third arm. Her world is made up of magic and most of the time, using it is just reflex. She defines herself by her Craft and her castes, so that can be a sore spot, if she thinks someone is questioning her competence or her devotion to her castes.
*She is carrying a lot of guilt for 'abandoning' her people. She tries not to show it, but it's there and folks can unknowingly trip over it.
*She cannot cook. (How I wish I could have gotten her into the cooking class, too!)
*She Lady Macbeth in the play. Come see it!
*She runs the Magic Reserves with Merlin (
bigdamndestiny) and Tony (
wantstodirect
*She's currently dating Leda (
lostheiroffaery), crushing on Ben (
momslilassassin), and close friends with Dinah, Emma, Ender, Triela, and Leto (
blondecanary,
icecoldfrost,
endsthegame,
sorella_vecchia, and
future_sandworm). She frequently wishes to throttle Arthur (
bitch_prince) and has been assured the feeling is mutual. No, this is one instance where dislike does not equal UST.
*A quick note about Karla's sexuality: there's actually a lot of debate over whether or not Karla is a lesbian in the series. The telling lines are She doesn't like men. Not that way...the likelihood of Karla ever taking another man to bed were slim to none ("The Prince of Ebon Rih," Dreams Made Flesh). However certain readings (and things Anne Bishop has reportedly said to fans via forums, correspondance, and cons) have led to speculation that it's not that Karla likes females, it's just that she's too traumatized to ever like males.
I'm playing it somewhere in the middle. Right now, Karla is 15 and her body is only now starting to awaken sexually. She mostly likes girls, but there are a few guys that she also finds attractive and crushes on. Whether this is just a bit of confusion as her hormones adjust will be seen.
And now the mun!
I'm Nuance (yes, that was the name I was given at birth), I live in Massachusetts (East Coast is the best coast!) and I have a herd of teal deer that follow me around, in case you couldn't tell. I'm getting my Master's in English, and I live with my husband and two cats. I'm usually on during the afternoon hours and late at night. I can be found at
shadowravyn (which has been mostly abandoned since I started playing FH in May) and my email is shadowravyn at yahoo dot com. I can also be found on AIM as booksomewench. I'm not on often, but it's been happening more and more since the BDE (and it's all Len's fault).
