Room 218, Saturday Morning

Karla had made a wise and well-thought out plan for today. She was just going to stay in her room all day long. She hadn't slept well again (third night running), and that was just adding to her temper. Being fifteen and overly hormonal was one thing. Being fifteen, and having this be what jumpstarts your hormones?

That's just unfair.

She was going to sit in her room, alternating between napping, reading, and exploring the Wikipedia that Ender had shown her Thursday morning on the roof. She was wearing loose pants, one of Morton's old shirts, buttoned to the throat, and dealing with the heat by drinking several glasses of cool wine.

It was times like this she wished she didn't burn alcohol off so quickly.

She was determined not to leave the room today. We'll see how long that lasts.

Fiona had itchy feet this morning.

She really had no reason to be on the second floor, no reason to be wandering around the building at all, but her feet had itched and she had found herself curious about the dorms: who was where, what was in each of the common rooms... This eventually brought her past Karla's door. Seeing the crack, she did what most people did.

She, with the utmost respect, attempted to peer through the crack to see whose room it might be. When she saw, she gave a little wave.

"Hey, Fiona," Karla said with a smile, setting aside her new laptop. "Kiss kiss. Come in. Wine?" she offered. She still hadn't gotten the 'Fiona doesn't eat EVER' memo. "I hear your week's been a little...eventful," she said, saved from bitchiness by the genuine sympathy in her voice. "Come in and hide out with me. I have no shame in admitting that's what I'm doing."

"Hiding sounds about right," she said as she slipped through the door, "...and wine sounds nice right now."

She didn't eat or drink, but that was mostly out of choice. After all, it didn't taste like anything to her and there was no hunger to satisfy; her body could survive without it now. Alcohol, however, still functioned and as such, while she couldn't appreciate the vintage, she could reap the questionable benefits of such a drink.

Karla called in a glass, tucked up her legs so Fiona had a place to sit on her bed, and floated the wine over. "It's Kaeleeran, which means it's pretty strong, or so says everyone here," she warned.

"As for how I'm doing....well, I'm drinking before noon. That say anything?"

"Alcohol needs to be strong for me, I think," or so she'd observed from the one experiment at Caritas.

"...that bad, huh?"

"For the Blood, sex is an important part of life. Thus, we receive instruction about it from a young age." Karla took a long swallow of her wine. "However, the Darker the Jewel we wear, the more an affect it has on our physical bodies. I need to eat more to stay healthy and drink more to feel the affects of alcohol, for example. I also started puberty later than other girls my age. This was a...hormonal wake up call, I guess you could say. I knew all about sex theoretically, but this was the first week that knowledge has ever had a practical application. It's disconcerting, to say the least." She took another drink. "And, with a lack of safe males around, also incredibly frustrating."

"I wasn't allowed to deal with boys. Ever. Other than my brother," she shared, sitting down, "and I've had, well, a lot of changes in myself in the last couple of months."

She held out a hand for the wine.

"So I kind of understand."

A part of her itched to pull out the sapphire and hold onto it for comfort, but she left it under her shirt.

Karla floated the wine over to Fiona, her own Sapphire glowing softly at the use of Craft. "Not my brother, but the only male I ever allowed close to me was my cousin Morton, so, yeah. I think we understand one another."

There had been other males around of course. But they had been dangerous. She had been well aware of them and sex, of course. She was a Healer; she often dealt with the witches they'd used and broken.

Jack was in a good mood this morning (and how!) and missed his door. On the way back, he saw the door cracked, and peered in. "Hey!" he waved.

"Hi Jack!" Karla called, waving. "If you're coming in, I've instituted a three foot rule until all thic craziness blows over." She took a long swig of wine at the thought, though still seemed happy to see him. "By the way, I've got my blindfold."

Not-dirty. For realz.

"A three-foot rule? I'll try not to break it," he said with a wink. "Does that mean you want me to come in? And who's wearing the blindfold?"

Hey, it's a valid question.

"I means you may, come in," Karla answered, brushing aside all questions of 'want.' "And the blindfold is for me, tomorrow, when you take me to that super-secret place you can't tell me about."

Karla gestured to the chair at her desk. "So, what's up for you today?" she asked. "Any plans?"

"Not really...just wherever my feet will take me." He grinned and flopped into the chair, leaning back onto the desk. "You got anything in mind?"

"Staying in my room, reading the wikipedia, and trying to avoid whatever the island is doing to all of us." Karla said firmly.

Leda had spent the last few days hiding so as to avoid awkwardness. Yes really.

But today, she had come to a decision and just couldn't sit still anymore. So she came knocking on Karla's door.

"Leda, come in!" Karla said, a warm and genuine smile on her face. "I haven't seen you all week. I think it means you are smarter than I am." She got off her bed to give me friend a warm hug--She promised herself that she was going to try and keep it 'warm and friendly,' not 'hot and bothered'.

To bad no one has ever told her about mice, men, and their plans.

Leda stiffened at first, very briefly in surprise at the reception, but very soon returned the hug enthusiastically.

"I dunno how smart I am Sam. But I'll take it. I should be welcomed like this by all my friends."

"I've got wine, too," Karla said, leading Leda further into the room. She'd noticed the stiffness, but didn't comment on it. She figured that, like everyone else, Leda was just suffering from whatever in Hell was wrong with this island. "This place has me so jumpy, I'm drinking before noon. I'm not sure whether my mother would have been appalled, or applauding my ingenuity."

"You too?" Leda giggled. "That's where I've been the last few days." She followed Karla and plopped down on the bed, hoping it was the right one.

Since Karla's was messy, with a wine bottle, glass, and laptop casually placed on the air, it was easy to guess which was hers. "What convinced you to brave the wilds of the dorm today?" Karla asked, sitting back where she'd been before Leda had shown up. "Run out of food?"

That was probably going to be what made Karla leave eventually.

"Well I couldn't spend all my time drinking myself senseless. Also yeah, less food. And, I got lonely."

"Well, I'm glad you came down to see me," Karla smiled. "Who's your roommate? Oh, and You missed your Elder Sibling. He popped by for a few minutes. I haven't seen mine all weekend. I think he's locked in his dorm with his boyfriend."
