Rome, Italy Thursday Evening Fandom Time

Even in Kaeleer, Karla made sure to keep a Fandom-based calendar handy, so she could keep track of things like friends' birthdays and things like that. A few days ago, she'd noted another anniversary was coming up, but not one as fun or exciting as a birthday.

Thursday, May 10th, was the day that Triela had died, last year. Funny how it felt like both more and less than that long. Funny how much it still hurt, an ache in her heart she doubted would ever go away.

After seeing that, Karla had made a few handwavy calls to people, friends of hers and Triela's that she thought might want to join her sojourn back to Italy. Unsurprisingly, several people had already made separate plans to do just that, but didn't mind combining those plans with hers. Karla couldn't speak for everyone, of course, but she was sure that very few people wanted to go back and remember their friend alone.

For once, Portalocity was willing to work with her, and she was able to set up several portals to meet in Rome for Thursday afternoon and a return set for late Thursday evening. Hopefully that would give everyone time to...do whatever they needed to do today.

"Hey," Dinah said, slipping an arm around Momoko's waist. "Good to see you here."

"You too!" Momoko smiled back, reaching for a return hug. "I was coming anyway, but it's totally better to grave visit with friends and family."

"Yeah. I was going to come alone, and then I got Karla's e-mail... this is better." She squinted upward at the bright sun; it was cool but clear today. A good day for visiting, even with the tightness in her chest. "What did you bring there?"

"Hmmm. Things for tending the grave." Momoko lifted the basket a bit so Dinah could see all the handwavy inside. "Some tea and cookies for Triela. Some snacks for anyone who wants them."

"Tea and cookies." Dinah smiled, a little sadly, wishing she could be angrier that Triela wasn't there to share them; glad she wasn't. Thinking of the first year after her mom died, lighting a candle and talking to Tony. "I like that. It's better than some customs. Or lack of them."

Momoko rubbed her nose, slightly embarrassed. "Well, it's one of the few times I can't help being traditional, grave visits. It's so important. For me, death means the person isn't with you, but they are still watching over you so it's totally return respect."

"It makes sense." Dinah sighed. "I don't... my family doesn't have too many customs about it. I just hope I don't do this wrong." She smiled a little. "Not that Triela would care. Or see the point, I'm guessing."

"Can you do things wrong here?" Momoko looked down to her basket. "Will it be a problem if I, you know, clean the grave? Light incense? I didn't think it would cause trouble!"

Dinah hugged her for reassurance. "No, really, it should be fine. As long as we're not defacing anything, I don't think the caretakers will mind. That's all they seem to try to stop in New Gotham. You know Triela would be cool with it."

"Triela would rather I go to the range and practice instead of wasting my time here." Momoko snorted lightly, glad to know her customs weren't illegal. Not that it would stop her, but...

"But no defacing. The grave is like the house of the spirit! That's why you clean it."

"So the gravestone is like the front door?" Dinah kind of liked that image. "We can always go practice later. She wasn't always right about this stuff. Talking her into music or shopping always took time."

"You can think of it like that?" It was actually kind of hard to describe something you've just always known, sorry Dinah. "And oh, clothes shopping was definitely the worst. Getting her to wear a nice dress or swimsuit? Totally not happening unless it was orders."

"Grrrr. Stupid orders," Dinah muttered, remembering the pain in the ass of the white bathing suit in Bermuda. "At least she's somewhere no one can force her into something she doesn't want to wear now." A stab of sadness, that that had to come after death, made her breath catch. I miss her, she sent through her fingers to Momoko.

Me too.

"Me too," she repeated aloud, taking a breath; she totally hadn't meant to remind Dinah of that. "I miss her too. And I know what you've told me, about what happens here, what happened to her, but... But Triela seemed happiest when she was following orders. Even when it was something she didn't like, she totally seemed more comfortable."

Momoko shrugged lightly. Maybe it was just the way I wanted to see her.

"Yeah. I know." Dinah sighed, voice shaky. "Maybe she was just strong enough not to sweat things she knew she couldn't change." Maybe she was just content not to remember what kind of nightmare her life had been before the Society found her. Either way. It didn't stop Dinah missing her. "I want to tell her everything I've done in the last year; which is silly, maybe. Either she already knows, or ... well. Maybe she doesn't." Her lips quirked. "Maybe she's been on assignment."

"You should tell her, then. I totally plan to!" Momoko pulled Dinah close again. "It doesn't matter if they already know. They still like to hear from us. We've come to visit her, remember?"

"Right. Right." Dinah gave her an impulsive kiss on the cheek. "Let's go. And we'll get ice cream, afterward."
