glacial_queen: (Dinnertime)
One of the most difficult skills one needed to cultivate as Queen was the ability to look interested and focused on anything, even while your brain was elsewhere--in Karla's case, hundreds of leagues away, fretting over several small villages that had been covered in an avalanche. While all she wanted to do was remain at the estate, continuing to go over emergency relief plans, she was here instead, smiling and nodding and being overall a gracious and sociable Queen. Raven's luncheon for the caretakers and staff of various Sidran orphanages and children's homes had been a rousing success, raising funds from aristos who wanted to be seen as 'charitable' and raising morale for the people who actually did the hard work in the institutions themselves. Several grinning orphans were there, too, lucky enough to have earned a lunch with their Queen and the Court Healer, the woman who was putting in all the real effort into making things better for children across Glacia.

This was a good event and an important one, one that Karla and Raven had both been looking forward to for weeks, but right now it was all Karla could do not to gnash her teeth in impatience. How much longer did they have to stand here and smile and glad-hand when there were actual lives in danger?

And if this was how Karla was feeling, how much worse was it for Raven, who could teleport up north with a thought and start healing people immediately, if only they didn't have to be here right now?

Meanwhile, up in the mountains... )

glacial_queen: (Talking 3)
After another night of difficulty falling asleep and rest troubled by vague and disquieting dreams (all thanks to one errant Consort who was now several days past due and not answering his damn phone!), Karla had opted for a late breakfast in bed this morning. There was nothing wrong with enjoying some of the perks of being Queen of an entire Territory, dammit, especially when she was just a few hours away from having to get dressed to visit Sidra for Raven's orphanage fundraiser and luncheon. Why get dressed just to have breakfast when she was just going to have to change into something obnoxiously formal and fancy in a little while anyway?

She'd just finished letting her contraceptive brew steep when a psychic thread stabbed into her shields hard enough to make her jerk. Hot tea scalded her hand leaving a bright red mark behind, but that was nothing compared to the news she was receiving.

*Lady!* Mallory 'shouted' into her skull. *There's been an avalanche in the north! At least one village has been lost, their Queen is dead, and possibly more than one. I'm getting multiple reports on psychic threads, requests for assistance, everything. I'm heading back to the estate now,* Mallory continued. He'd been in Sidra, overseeing the last of the preparations for the afternoon. *But here's everything I know so far.* The information he relayed was grim, as was his reminder that this was all early news yet. It would likely only become more bleak as the day went on.

At the word 'avalanche,' Karla had flung herself out of bed, breakfast forgotten. By the time he'd gotten to the estimated casualties--in the hundreds, perhaps thousands--Karla had thrown on her bathrobe, opened the doors to her suite, and started shouting orders to whatever members of estate staff were nearby. She needed members of her First Circle, maps of the region, lists of emergency supplies, names of Healers with experience in these kinds of situations, whatever was necessary to assist her people.

So much for the perks of being a Queen. )

glacial_queen: (Don't Understand)
"Mother Night," Karla whispered. "Mother Night."

The group had stepped out of Raven's netherverse on a flat-topped hill that was one of Sceval's official landing places, the gently rolling land spread out below them. Large meadows provided good grazing. Stands of trees provided shade on summer afternoons. Creeks veined the land with clean water.

She had stood on this hill a handful of times in the past five years, looking down on unicorns while the stallions kept careful watch over the grazing mares and the foals playing tag.

Now she looked down on a slaughter.

Turning to the north, Lucivar shook his head and swore softly. "This wasn't a few bastards who had come for a horn to take home as a hunting trophy. This was a war."

Karla blinked away tears. Of all the Blood, of all the kindred races, the unicorns had always been her favorite. They had been the stars in the Darkness, the living examples of power and strength blended with gentleness and beauty. And now that gentleness and beauty was marred by violence, torn white bodies hacked and brutalized and left to lie in the dirt. There were foals as well as pregnant mares in the carnage, protected by rings of stallions and juvenile males who'd been overrun.

"No," she said, shaking her head at the scene. "No. We can't--we can't let this happen. We can't let this stand." Her hands balled into fists and she shook with reaction and rage. "Call them," she said, slashing a glance at Raven and Emma. Surely, together, they could figure out something. "Call them. Call them all. Everyone and anyone you can think of. I want the largest cavalry in the history of Fandom riding to our aid."

She looked back over the hill and buried her face in her hands. "Call them and tell them the unicorns are being massacred. And we need their help."

The cry for help )

The day had been wonderful. Karla had declared herself in need of some 'girl time' and Raven in need of some relaxation, and Jaenelle likely in need of some fun, and so she'd swept off to Dhemlan, with a protesting Raven and a resigned Warren in her wake. Warren had been left to get get beaten on by Lucivar and Jaenelle picked up instead--along with Emma, who had been called in as reinforcements. It was going to be a day of preening, pampering, and fun, whether Raven and Jaenelle liked it or not!

Besides, with their shared birthday less than eight weeks away, she needed Emma's input on her gift idea for Warren. It was a tad risqué, which meant it was a) right in Emma's bailiwick, and b) something best done in a Territory she did not rule.

In all, it was the kind of perfect and relaxing day that came about all too rarely. That night, they returned to the Hall after taking in the theater and Karla fell asleep nestled in Warren's arms with a smile on her face.

Of course, it couldn't last.

The roaring started in the wee hours of the night, nowhere near long enough after Karla had fallen asleep. Startled, she fell out of bed, getting tangled in the sheets in her haste to try to stand up again. "Pants!" she yelled to Warren, who had leapt to his feet much more gracefully than she and was running towards the door. He'd grabbed his sticks and that was it, more than willing to find out what was wrong wearing nothing but his skin. From the look he leveled her way, he thought her insistence on trousers was an irritation at best. In a gesture of compromise, he snagged his pants with a claw, not bothering to put them on, leaving Karla to scramble to her feet and chase after him. After she'd shrugged into her bathrobe, anyway.

The hallway was crowded with bodies in various stages of dress. Uncle Saetan arrived last, rubbing at his arm and tried to push past Karla. He got a sharp elbow in his belly for his pains. "What in the name of Hell is going on here?" he yelled.

In which there is yelling, fainting, and psychicing, all with a lovely view. )

Karla hadn't expected to return to Yllestad after finding the field full of witchblood. But then the storm had blown up, and Yllestad was the only closest city where the entire army could bunk down for the night. There was no question of her people trying to set up tents tonight. The storm had beaten them here and moved northward, but they were still dealing with the gale-force winds and the odd spats of hail. They would take shelter wherever they could until the storm blew out and then settle up then. The prospect of good food and warm quarters had the army far more cheerful than one would expect, marching as they were through a literal dark and stormy night. The south gate had stood open for them, as if Yllestad had expected their return and they were only too glad to take the city up on its welcome. They entered from the south, glad to get out of the stinging wind, good-naturedly arguing which places has the most comfortable beds and most fortifying wines.

Warning for descriptions of dead NPCs )

Fuck. Someone needed to do something. Say something. Find out what happened. There was a moment when Karla looked around, searching for someone to take command, to be the voice of authority that her people needed.

Right. Her people. That voice of authority needed to be her.

"Spread out," she barked, voice brittle. "Try to find any survivors. There have to be some, somewhere." She wasn't sure who she was trying to convince more: herself or her army. "Be thorough. Don't touch anything until we can get a better idea of what happened here! Be careful! Go in groups, cover more ground!"

She pointed towards the center of town. "GO!"

And so they searched... )

Karla stopped dead--who even thought of that phrase? why do people use it? why is my brain even thinking about this stuff right now? shouldn't it be working on something more important?--when she saw what the soldier was standing over. Another body, yes, but this one was wearing a jacket.

Of course he's wearing a jacket. It's winter in Glacia, bint, everyone's wearing jackets, you could freeze to death out here!

Her brain jabbered on, trying to get her to think about ANYTHING other than the horrors in front of--behind, beside, near, far, everywhere, Mother Night everywhere--her. Karla did her best to focus, kneeling down to brush the snow and mud away. Yep, as she'd thought. The jacket was one of the big, comfortable down ones that Jono's team had been outfitted with, including the patch that half of the army had stayed up late sewing onto their shoulders.

This was one of Jono's scouts.

"Warren," she said tightly. "Warren, I need you up in the air. I need you up there now and I need you to tell me what you see."

The news just keeps getting worse. )

Momoko sat straight up and looked around a moment. She'd learned over the past few months in Glacia that when she heard this faint sound of Karla's voice and felt the small tug at the back of her head, it meant Karla was broadcasting something. And broadcasting instead of calling was Not Good.

But since she wasn't telepathic, she wasn't getting the message.

"Dinah?! Samantha?! De..." She had to swallow hard when she almost called to Denys. "I hear Karla..."

"What's going on?"

The call no one wants to get. )

Warren had managed to drag her a few yards at most before Karla shrugged him off. "I am capable of walking, thank you," she drawled. "I know you're currently confused about what I'm capable of, but trust me on this one."

"Don't worry," Warren retorted, "There's very little I don't think you're capable of right now." The last few hours of fuming followed by Karla's cute little remarks were taking a toll even on his ability to keep quiet.

Karla's jaw clenched as she bit back another comment. They had potential super-natural creepiness to investigate and that took precedence over throttling her boyfriend, no matter how pleasant that image was. And once they got backstage... )

After a morning of Valentine's Day-inspired snuggling, Karla and Warren had headed to LA to meet up with Wesley and his friends/coworkers before their evening entertainment. The polite getting-to-know-you chatter had been cut short when Karla had asked what the dress code for the evening should be. She was thinking about choosing between several of the outfits she'd vanished away for the occasion, but her innocent question had snowballed into a decision that the ladies were going to leave the gentlemen behind for a few hours while they went off to find something appropriate for the evening.

Fortunately, Cordy knew EXACTLY where to take them to splurge. )

A lot of things had happened in Faerie since the weekend, when Leda, Karla, Blossom, and James had taken down the tyrant. A surrender had been negotiated. An ally had been buried. The rebuilding had begun.

Karla hadn't seen any of it. Immediately after her plea for clemency had been delivered, Blossom had taken her aside and proceeded to bully and browbeat her within an inch of her life. She'd been terrible. Blossom fights dirty, y'all. )

Yeah. So, that had happened. Even now that she was back to her normal size, Karla was not best pleased with Momoko for shriveling her. It was stupid! She would have been even more upset if she didn't agree that her own behaviour had been equally stupid. Not then, she hadn't, of course. But time and distance (and food and rest and reflection) had done an excellent job of reminding her that she was a compulsive (and impulsive!) idiot.

Oh, and Warren had helped. Oh yes, he had made his feelings on the matter VERY CLEAR, pretty much from the moment that Blossom had shown up in Sunnydale.

Special Delivery! )

As Karla had started to stutter out another excuse, Warren had come to a decision of his own. He had calmly dropped her in his candyless shirt pocket, calmly proceeded to book a portal to Kaeleer, and calmly called the Hall to let Lucivar know that they would be arriving shortly--he'd needed to be somewhere he could hit things and not have to worry about pretending to be normal. Karla was pretty sure he'd also needed to be somewhere he could throttle her and not get arrested for it. They'd both known that when he finally dropped this illusion of calm, things were going to get violent.

And now, almost a full Kaeleeran week later, Karla still hadn't seen Warren since he'd handed a tiny her to Saetan. He'd been sleeping in the Consort suite with the door firmly locked between then and had risen each morning with the sun to go out to the grounds to work through his temper. For a week. Now Karla had a portal booked back to Fandom and she wasn't entirely sure she'd be seeing him before she left.

Karla could hardly contain her excitement. She'd gotten a psychic thread from Helene earlier in the afternoon, requesting her presence at the meeting hall that evening. All day, apprentice and journeymaid Black Widows had been cleaning and airing out the building, the last of the patients having returned home to recuperate the evening before. That could have just been Helene's common sense sense at work. No one who could read psychic scents would want to gather in a makeshift hospital; too much pain and fear and discomfort lingered in the walls.

Common sense or no, Karla was fairly certain that wasn't why the young Black Widows had spent all day diligently scrubbing down every inch of the building.

When a journeymaid proved herself adept at the Craft and practices of the Hourglass, she was acknowledged by her coven and promoted, receiving an hourglass pendant with all of the sand in the lower half as visible proof to all that she was a student no longer, but a full-fledged Black Widow. Karla had been a journeymaid for years, since before leaving Helene's coven to return to the estate and Hobart. In the intervening years, she'd grown up, practiced her Craft, helped friends and acquaintances work through mental and emotional trauma, founded a village to save Black Widows, and rule Haven as Queen for a full season. If there was a more thorough way to prove herself worthy of attaining full Black Widow status, she couldn't think of what it was.

So, after putting in her day in the fields and eating a hearty dinner (not that Warren was around to see, blast him), Karla got ready for her investiture ceremony. She reluctantly decided against wearing Widows Weeds (not everyone had theirs and it would be rude seem too eager), so she settled for a nice dress and brushing her hair and then blithely skipping her way from their cottage to the meeting hall.

She had a cheerful smile for Helene when an apprentice opened the door and led her way in, one that turned into brilliant when she saw who else had shown up. Jaenelle and Gabrielle had also been invited--Helene must have considered this a very special occasion indeed. Her smile faltered a moment later when she saw Luthvian's forbidding countenance near her friends, but regained its merriness when she realized Helene had probably just invited every Black Widow Karla knew. And it never hurt to be polite to the mother of Saetan's youngest son.

This was probably going to be one of the happiest nights of Karla's life.

Spoiler: It wasn't )

glacial_queen: (Telephone)
Karla paced back and forth in her room, phone in hand. Graduation was just a day--Hell's fire just hours--away and she had a decision to make. Warren was graduating. That was one of those life-milestones that people looked back on all their life.

One of those milestones that was usually a celebrated by having a lot of friends and family around.

While Warren had plenty of friends who would be happy to watch him cross the stage and get his diploma, he'd severed the ties with his father in January, after the whole mutant cure debacle. And that was the crux of Karla's dilemma. Everything she knew about this world said that Warren, Jr. should be at graduation. But would inviting the father be seen as a betrayal by the son?

Karla didn't know. And wasn't entirely sure what she should do. Would Warren regret his father being present now? Or absent later? How would she feel if their positions were reversed? Okaaay, that wasn't the best example. She'd give anything to have her parents at her graduation. But if someone were to invite Hobart...on the other hand, no matter how mad Warren was at his father, she didn't think he felt the same utter loathing she did for Hobart. After all, in his own misguided way, Warren, Jr. had just been trying to help.

Would that be enough for Warren? Could it be? Should it be? Karla wasn't sure. But at a normal graduation, family would be there for him. And, well, Warren liked normal. More than that, he deserved to have as many people there cheering for him as possible.

Biting her lip, Karla pressed the button. )

Breathing hard, Karla let herself fall onto Warren's chest, unable or unwilling to hold herself up any longer. "And good morning to you, too," she said with a tired chuckle, nuzzling her face into his neck. "I take it you weren't too tired from all that dancing we did last night?"

And what dancing it had been, too.

"I recover quickly," Warren replied, not bothering to hide the little smirk that was tugging at his lips. "But it seems to me like you recuperated well enough from the dancing, yourself."

"You give me plenty of reason to keep up." Karla pressed a kiss to his jawline and reluctantly convinced her body to roll to the side so Warren could shift about if he wanted to. He was okay with laying on his wings given suitable motivation and distraction--which she was happy to provide in abundance--but she hated to keep him pinned down longer than necessary. Especially since he was so generous in his agreement of when it was necessary. "Though I will admit, I'm about ready to fall back asleep for a little while longer. We were up late and--" she yawned "--then someone felt the need to wake us up early."

Ish. For Karla, quarter past eleven on a Saturday was early, all right?

"I forget that you're part bear and feel the instinctive need to hibernate on weekends," Warren teased, taking that invitation to roll over and shifting his weight about, his wings splaying out behind him with not much in the way of grace or style. There had been plenty of grace and style at the dance. This morning was for being close, gentle teasing, and appreciating having Karla all to himself after the unwelcome reminder that Prom had given him, that his time as a high school student was nearly over. "Can you ever forgive me?"

"Maybe I'll be in a more forgiving mood after my nap," Karla replied, languorously stretching her legs while Warren kept her tucked neatly against his side. The sheets and blankets had long since been kicked off the sides of the bed, but he was enough to keep her warm anyway. "It will almost certainly require groveling in the form of room service. And possibly a little more of what woke me up in the first place."

Shameless? Damn right.

"But not until I've slept for at least another hour." She grabbed her watch off the bedside table, the only item that had survived an early wing-buffeting. Eh. They'd put that clock back before they left. And Warren would pay for the lamp's replacement. "Barely noon? Make it an hour and a half."

"Really, I wouldn't complain if we just stayed like this for the rest of the day," Warren admitted, one of those gracelessly splayed wings rustling about for a moment before folding around the both of them. "I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday."

glacial_queen: (The Hall/Keep)
After the debacle of Agio (and the even more debacle-y aftermath), Karla had promised to keep Saetan, Lucivar, and Morton apprised of major events at Fandom. She might often interpret that promise as conveniently as possible, but there was no way that even she could spin the end of all creation as something other that a 'major event.' Which was why two months after reality had been repaired, she was standing in Saetan's office, telling them what had happened in stark and painful detail. Of course, since what had happened had affected all of Kaeleer, even if they didn't know it, Karla was not delivering her report to Saetan alone, or even Saetan and Lucivar. No, Jaenelle and several members of the coven and the boyos had all crowded in, too, and were listening to her clustered in the chairs at the back of his office.

It could have been worse. There might not have been a Kaeleer to return back to. Or the split between her and Warren could have been permanent, leaving her to stand in front of the High Lord's great blackwood desk alone while spilling out the story. It was comforting, having him beside her, so she could reach out and hold his hand for comfort at a few parts.

Karla had done all of the speaking up until this point, laying out all of what had happened in sparse detail. They had heard the entirety of the account, all the way up to remembering the universe back into existence without interrupting, but she didn't think that silence was going to last for very long, not as her story wound down to an end. From the shifting behind her and the faces that Saetan and Lucivar had made at various points in her tale, once she stopped talking, she was going to face a torrent of words.

Most of them probably invectives. At least from Lucivar. )

glacial_queen: (Exploring Indoors)
While Warren searched his father's office--and had politely told her that no, he really didn't need help--Karla prowled about his old bedroom, looking and poking and examining at this part of Warren's life she'd never expected to see. This had been his room since he was old enough to have one of his own, and she could see layers of his life here, like fossils frozen in layers of sediment. On the shelf, a battered old car, bright red and sleek, looking like it once saw a lot of use. Her fingers traced wobbly letters carved into the wooden desk in the corner: Warren Kenneth Worthington III. Thick accounting texts lined the back of the desk, like stodgy tutors in a row, but when she moved a few, a yellowed and forgotten comic book fell out from where it had been shoved behind them.

The room itself felt old and unused, for all that Warren had only been gone for a matter of months in this dimension. No, not unused--abandoned. Its occupant had gone, but other than a business like cleaning to keep it from getting musty, nothing had been touched. But that vital spark, that something that kept a room feeling lived in and dynamic, that had left when Warren had and their brief sojourn here wasn't enough to bring that back. Even his psychic scent had nearly been eradicated, covered and erased by the harsh scent of chemicals and cleaners. The sheets smelled like fake flowers and the kind of fresh air only found in bottles, but when she pressed her face into the comforter, she could catch the faintest hint of the male who'd slept beneath it for so long.

She wandered around this space, poking at books and touching forgotten knick-knacks, looking at bare walls and cold surroundings. The picture she was drawing from it was a lonely one, not that this came as any surprise, and a rather hollow one as well. The room was empty, devoid of anything that suggested Warren had a personality of his own. There were objects here, things that announced, 'Yes, a person lives here or once did,' but nothing that said who that person was.

Karla thought of her own room, back at the dorms; pictures of friends stuck on the corkboard on her door, her frog tank on the dresser, her comforter with New Gotham's skyline silhouetted across it, herbs in clusters hanging from the walls, clothes discarded on the floor or kicked under her bed, trashy romance novels lying dog-eared next to her bed, or half-hidden under a pillow...Her room probably didn't paint the most flattering picture of who she was, but it did give plenty of insight into her personality. This room? Was almost as sterile as the cleaning products that had been so recently used in it.

It saddened her, to see what his room had been like. To see just how cut off from everything he really had been. Read more... )

Karla glanced out Jono's window and saw the forcefield doing something...weird. She wasn't sure what it was doing, but she was almost positive that whatever it was meant nothing well for the island. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valor, she headed for the stairs and out door, as fast as her feet could carry her. Jono had snagged Joni and left for supplies while she was still crashed out on the couch, so if he wanted to yell at her for not locking up behind her, he'd have to find her later.

She also vanished his guitar case on the way out. Because she was a good friend and it was leaning against the wall as she ran for the door.

Outside, everything was chaos. The town was swarmed with hundreds of Auditors brandishing makeshift weaponry. They filled the streets, looking for people to attack or streaming towards the school. As much as Karla wanted to take out a few over what they'd done to Raven, her Black Widow senses were screaming at her to run, and they only got louder every time she looked up at the sky. Karla dashed into the park, hoping the Auditors would ignore it since there were no people there. She flung herself through tree branches and bushes, nearly blundering into a flock of panicked flamingos who had somehow ventured far from the lake.

Karla hit the ground and pushed herself up again, heedless of the scrapes along her palms or the holes in the knees of her jeans. There was a sudden chorus of agonized honking behind her and when she turned her head to spare the miserable birds a look and bit back on a wail of despair. The forcefield had failed and the Nothing was rushing in, devouring Apocalypse Avenue in less than a second.

There was no way she could outrun this thing. She would never make it in time. )

Karla checked her itinerary another time, waiting for the portal that would take her home. Seven layovers, including a long one in...Revolutionary France? Huh. That sounded interesting. Maybe she'd pick up some tips for her eventual bid to regain Glacia from her uncle--wait. No reason to think of that now. Nope, no thinking, time to look over the itinerary again, it didn't matter that she'd practically memorized it. It was a nice distraction from--Oh, look! Another one in Pompeii, and the itinerary was stressing the fact that it was for November 22, 79AD. And, hey! Her last stop would be four hour layover during "The Blitz" in London! That sounded like...some kind of fair, or something! A bit of fun and excitement before...

Dinah. Momoko. Tahiri. Hayley. Leda. Priestly. Countless others that she hadn't known, but had reached out across the multiverses to let them know that something was wrong, that worlds were disappearing into the ever-night.

Before she ended up in Kaeleer. Before she stood with her people as Kaeleer finished its descent into the Darkness and faded away to a memory in the minds of the very few who remained on Fandom island.

But she didn't want to think about that. About nothingness and darkness--a darkness she could only hope was the same as the loving embrace of the Darkness and not a complete obliteration of everything she'd ever known. Of course, what else was there to think of? How she'd taken the coward's way out and left handwavy messages for the friends she couldn't bear to say goodbye to in person? How she'd kissed Warren's sleeping face one last time and crept away while she still had the nerve to leave and do what was right?

Hopefully, Fandom would do what they did best and figure out some way to fix whatever was going wrong before the island itself was swallowed up. Maybe they'd even find some way to reverse it, though she doubted that. It didn't matter. Her place wasn't here. It was with her people, watching over them until the stars blinked out and there was nothing left.

And then there was no more time for thoughts; the portal was opening in front of her. Taking one last breath of Fandom air, Karla prepared to step through. *Goodbye,* she sent on a psychic thread to anyone who would hear. *I will love you for as long as I can.*
